Hello,
I am facing a strange issue of some videos not playing, instead it displays "Unable to Connect to the Content Server".
I've done some extensive analysis and have some conclusions, but my findings don't seem to make much sense. I'm sharing it here so that someone who has better experience in this could possibly help me.
The System.
I have my PMS running on Pine 64. Based on the instructions found on the web, I've installed the Synology NAS package and things work like a charm for the most part. The PMS version is Version 1.2.6.2975-9394c87
My Plex Player is my Samsung TV. UN65J6630D.
Plex app version: 2.005
Secure Connections: Disabled.
Playback Mode: Direct Play (set as Default).
The Problem
Some of my movies fail to play on my Samsung Plex. When I press play, it gives me the error saying "Unable to Connect to the Content Server". I have copied these movies over to another high powered (Intel i7, 24GB etc) PMS server, and tried to play from that, but the TV still gives the same error.
I've tried to play these movies on Plex Web, and it works just fine.
I've tried to play this on my plex mobile app / chromecast, and that also works fine.
On my Samsung TV, if I set the playback mode to Transcoded, then all of these movies which give error, no longer gives the error, and it starts to play fine in Transcoded mode. Only Direct Play fails.
The Findings
After gathering a list of movies that failed to play, I started analyzing them one by one (MediaInfo, File Type, File Size etc) and I compared them to the movies that had similar properties, but worked fine on Direct Play mode. This is what I've found:
All the movies that failed to play has the following common properties:
1. Had ".avi" as their extension
2. On MediaInfo, the Format showed as "MPEG-4 Visual"
3. The filesize was above 2 GB.
I searched for some movies which has properties (1) and (2), but file size was less than 2 GB, and such movies played fine.
So the conclusion of my Finding is:
AVI files with MPEG-4 format having a file size of 2GB or more fails to play on Direct Play mode, and will throw the error "Unable to Connect to the Content Server".
The Confusion
So, after establishing all this, the question remains, WHY? Why does it happen that way? What could be the significance with the 2GB file size?
It's also worth mentioning, some files that were less than 2GB also at times failed to play, and throw the same error msg, but If I tried the second time or third time, it will play fine. So I'm thinking may be it's something to do with the format, and may be it takes quite a bit of resources to process it. And when the filesize it bigger, somehow its timing out? I don't know!
Anyone here is able to explain what could be happening here?
Any more importantly, any idea how to fix this? I really don't want to re-encode all those movies again into a friendly format that will play on the TV!
Thanks!
